And for those of you who don't want quite that much trouble, there's Gentoo,

Unfortunately, not all the Linux software I use provides source code.
Nor does the thought of spending hours compilling source code for basic,

I first tried LFS in 2002, although tedious (the builds can be scripted if
you're in a hurry), the knowledge gained was invaluable. I switched to it
permanently in 2003. I have not used any other distro since.
