Reuters [...] has asked the court to deny all
the third-party
motions...
The pedantic programmer in me screamed "this motion
cannot be passed because if it were, it would have to be
denied and it is a
third-party motion". Reuters avoided
the logic bomb by asking for various
third-party
motions to by denied - not all of them. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

On Distrowatch's highly unscientific Page Hit Counter, Ubuntu is currently 3rd
(and sliding) after years in the #1 spot.

Something just crossed my mind. Maybe it has been answered allready but I could
not find it.
First, how long are all these software patents valid?
Second, can that be extended?
Because, if all these companies are patenting just about anything now, that may
mean that the world is free of patents in a few (10 20 ?) years. Right?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

German judge says Motorola infringes.
Why does Microsoft not attack Google
directly in the U.S. ?
Perhaps because they know their lame
patents are
not worthy for their FUD/
extortion scheme and Google will not
fold.

Another TechDirt
article. The comment
above on "Rich Guys say Give us more money..."
reminded me
of this.
This leads to a TorrentFreak
article as its source.
Summary: 65% of music
not purchased. Only 4% of total music
acquisitions (legal and otherwise) are
from "file lockers".
That is an RIAA term, from a study that they commissioned.
I'm betting that they wish that they hadn't uploaded it to a
public ftp site.
;-)
Really enjoying the Johnathon Coulton album on the Humble
Music
Bundle.

"By the dawn of the millennium, the hallways at
Microsoft were no longer home to barefoot programmers in Hawaiian shirts working
through nights and weekends toward a common goal of
excellence;"
Wha' ?
"That very moment at Microsoft’s
headquarters .. a group of executives were developing a device .. that allowed
customers to download digital versions of any written material .. The software
had been designed to run on a pad with touch-screen technology, a feature later
popularized with the iPhone"
Microsoft invented the iPhone
??
“You look at the Windows Phone and you can’t help but wonder, How
did Microsoft squander the lead they had with the Windows CE devices? .. They
had a great lead, they were years ahead. And they completely blew it. And they
completely blew it because of the bureaucracy”.
I can recall
Microsoft partnering with the TRON consortium to bring a realtime operating
system to the market, specifically designed for such mobile devices. That whole
article is just so wrong .. and no mention of Mosaic or NCSA in the entire
article ..

Earlier this year the sentences against the Pirate Bay defendants
were made final. Aside from prison sentences, they will have to pay damages to
the entertainment industries, including €550,000 to several major music labels.
The court awarded the damages to compensate artists and rightsholders for their
losses.
However, it now turns out that artists won’t see a penny of the
money, as the labels have allocated it to IFPI to fund new anti-piracy
campaigns.

Under federal law, Ride’s domestic partner of 27 years will not
receive death benefits or Social Security payments. Is that any way to treat a
hero?
[...]
In 1983, when Ride became the first American woman in space,
if she had been openly gay or even discovered to be quietly in a relationship
with a woman, she would have likely been denied security clearance and possibly
fired.
[...]
Our government should not treat her partner like an
alien.
