Caveat: I'm not a psychologist, so the following is based on what I've
learned via other sources then that profession.
Such security personnel
are taught to pay attention to a lot more then just the word response such as
verbal and visual cues.
While asking such an innocuous question the
average person won't generally exhibit any signs of nervousness for
example.
However, someone hiding drugs in the case along with their
instrument may.
You are right that only the most intent-on-being-caught
criminal is going to answer with something they shouldn't have - such as drugs,
bomb, firearm, etc.
But at the same time, Security can not allow
themselves to become complacent with such answers. Imagine how bold terrorists
will get if they witness numerous occurances of people responding in such a way,
Security laughing at them and just waving them through instead of following
up.
