iPhone Buyers Waiting Half a Year?
Authored by: pem on Sunday, July 29 2012 @ 10:59 AM EDT
PJ, that article correctly states that iPhone sales are up year-over-year, but
the OP correctly states that iPhone sales are down from the previous quarter.

It's hard to tease out things like seasonality, etc. from numbers, but OTOH
Apple has really expanded the countries they ship to, and the global market for
smartphones is still expanding.

So are people waiting for iPhone 5, or is Samsung eating Apple's lunch. I
suspect it's a bit of both but I hope it's more the latter (and that other
Android/Meego/Maemo/open whatever) companies join Samsung at the buffet.

iPhone Buyers Waiting Half a Year?

Nothing I said as far as numbers are wrong. You prove it
yourself. Samsung sold 50.5 Million Smartphones, compared to
Apple 26 Million. That's what I said.

I indicated that Apple lost Market Share from the March
Quarter, having sold 37 Million. Which if thinking is
correct, means they over 10 Million less. That's about a 30%
market share loss 1st quarter to 2nd quarter. Samsung gained
market share from 47 Million to 50.5 Million. That's nearly
double Apple's Smartphones on this quarter.

I would say selling 2 to 1 in a Quarter that's routinely
better for Apple than the 1st is a bad sign. Because now
we're heading into Apple's Summer drought prior to launch of
New iPhone 5. Here's Piper Jaffray is saying Apple is
heading for a miss in September Quarter w/ just 24 Million
iPhones to be sold:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/connieguglielmo/2012/07/16/piper
-jaffray-says-iphone-5-pause-may-lead-to-more-downside-in-
apples-forecast/

Samsung however are headed for a Record Breaking 60+ Million
in September Quarter. Compared to that 24 Million for the
same Quarter iPhone sales. That means by the launch of
iPhone 5 Samsung will have sold in the neighborhood of 157.5
Million to Apple's 87 Million!

Now to top all that off, Apple's 4th Quarter projections
have been lowered to 47 million iPhone sold Total. Including
3GS, 4, 4s and new iPhone 5. So on the year, that's 134
Million iPhones... Total!

WSJ analyst trims estimate for Apple's December Quarter:
http://articles.marketwatch.com/2012-07-
25/industries/32842855_1_new-iphone-apple-shares-bill-shope

Samsung has two new models also dropping in the Dec Quarter
as well. So even if you picked a really conservative figure
for GSIII and Tab 2 (w/ Exynos A15 Big Little Technology),
would be say 45 to 50 Million (but I've seen projections as
high as 65 Million). So add 50 Million to 157.5 and you have
207.5 Million Smartphones Sold by Samsung and that's not
including another over 200 million feature phones for a
Grand Total of 400 Million Phones for Samsung to be #1 again
this year!

btw... Galaxy Note and a surprise Smartphone (could be new
Google Nexus smartphone) device will be running Exynos w/
ARM New Big Little Tech. Meaning it has 5 cores. One
extremely low power w/o screen on and 4 main cores that are
dynamically timed for greatest energy savings of up to 70%.
It will near double it's efficiency and that's something
Apple's new chip doesn't have!

I've also been a regular reader here years and think you and
this site are the greatest!
