Who invented the internet?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 27 2012 @ 08:38 AM EDT
"His statement was that the internet was put in place by collective action
as a means to profit businesses."

Yeah, that's a load of bovine excrement.

The internet was pure research byproduct. If it had been designed for big
business then it would just be AOL.

Since big business got involved, they've been trying to put the genie back in
the bottle. Thank $DEITY that they haven't managed yet.

And the World Wide Web was invented at CERN
Authored by: Winter on Friday, July 27 2012 @ 08:57 AM EDT
The "Internet" took of for the public with the arrival of the WWW and
the Mosaic browser in 1993.

When Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web at CERN, I have doubts whether
you could get any further away from "commerce" in a philosophical
way.

The benefits of the WWW to the world economy have justified any costs of CERN
for the next century. However, nothing in the policies of CERN or in the
motivation of Tim Berners-Lee and his collaborators could be construed in your
wildest fantasies as "profit businesses".

Who invented the internet?

"... President Obama's speech which generally laid
personal success at the feet of collective action."

Um, no. President Obama's speech simply recognized that even those who have
achieved personal success were able to do so because they were able to rely on
the results of collective action.

There's quite a big difference between his speech, which amounted to,
"Congratulations on your success, aren't you glad you had all these other
people who worked in the background to provide these services you rely
on?", and the sound-bite Republicans are playing over and over, implying
that it amounts to, "You sad sack! You didn't create anything!"
