I disagree, and here's why. One of the foundational
ethical obligations of a
journalist is to write
about misinformation and correct the record. If
you
research this, you'll see that it's so.
Well, I'll do it for you. Here's the Society of Professional
Journalists' Code of
Ethics, which includes these pieces: Journalists
should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting
information.
Journalists should:
— Test the accuracy of information
from all sources and exercise care to avoid inadvertent error. Deliberate
distortion is never permissible.... — Identify sources whenever feasible. The
public is entitled to as much information as possible on sources'
reliability.... - Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news
media.
It's a journalistic obligation in other words. I don't
see
it as fun. I see it as a requirement as a
journalist to tell the truth and
correct
misinformation. Otherwise, the internet becomes a cesspool
of
misinformation, with no way for anyone to know what is and what isn't actually
true. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
