The first incarnation of the current Windows platform (NT
3.10) was released 5 years after they started spending
millions on it, same for almost all big software products.
Ditto for most books, movies, music albums, poetry
collections, famous paintings...
Its always a gamble, and the income reflects on past work,
not the stuff you are currently working on.
Marketing mistakes aside, the current low gross revenue of
MS is due to disappointment with their current products
(Win7, Win2008, WinPhony7, Office2010, XBox360 Kinnect etc.)
compared to the amounts they spend making the (possibly, but
unlikely better) new products (WinRoT8,
DoNothingInThebackgroundServerRoT, WinRoTPhony8, Office
201x, next gen XBox).
The whole thing adjusted downward by the harsh times for the
world in general.
So MS bad quarter is not because of what they do now, but
because of what they did 5 years ago, shortly after BG left
the helm.
