Way back in the dark ages, I was a computer tech working on mini computers. The
company's main business was message switching, so I recall many of the changes
that happened over the past 40 years. When I started, big computers would be
connected to many teletype terminals. They'd use polling to start message
transmission. Later, I worked on the computers used for the telegram system in
Canada, as well as the Air Canada reservation system (Collins 8500C). I also
worked on other systems (Data General & DEC) that provided message switching
for customers and also PR1ME computers, used in a manner similar to what was
available from CompuServe etc. I first heard of the Internet in the early '90s
and got my first connection around 1994, IIRC. At that time, there was still
some discussion about whether the Internet could be used for commercial purposes
and my connection could be traced back through a small company to a university.
Back then apps such as Gopher and WAIS were in common use and I recall first
hearing about this thing called a "browser".
Back then, I had to use a 14.4 Kb dial up connection and it was up hill both
ways! ;-)
