judges can retire at any time, their case loads are then
re-assigned, i guess it is bad form to retire in the middle
of a major jury trial tho.
or they can recuse them self

Dear Judge motz,
You should be ashamed of yourself. You have been shown up by a bunch of
volunteers (Groklawians) and should therefore recluse yourself from any further
involvement in this case forthwith.
We (Groklawians) will sincerely hope that the Court of Appeal will rectify
your mistake and decide that your MOL judgment was infact awarded to the wrong
party.
