"By that argument a DVD player without the DVD is useless. When you insert
the DVD in the bay it becomes a useful machine able to play the DVD I want to
see."

Well....what use has a DVD player without the DVD?

"Or we can say a toaster is useless without the bread. But by providing
bread the toaster is now able to roast toasts."

"We can always argue the algorithm is useless without the data. We can
always argue that providing the data is an improvement over the situation where
the data is not present because the algorithm becomes useful when it wasn't
before. We can say that of any algorithm, universal or not. Supplying data is
not an improvement to the machine."

How many layers of abstraction do you have to go through before you are able to
justify that conclusion to yourself?

If you will stand there with a straight face and argue, for example, that a
computer without a web browser is not improved by the installation of a web
browser, then I am afraid you have become the posturing lawyers that you revile
so much.

May the farce be with you.
