It's the new and useful improvement to a machine (device).
Computer machines are not changed to a new patentable machine by adding software
(the point of PolR's article) and so the computer machine is not improved by
adding the software.
You may find that your computer is improved by adding software because you can
do more with it. However, PolR shows that it fails the patent test for a new and
useful machine or a novel improvement to an existing (prior art) machine.

You may improve the value of a computer without improving the computer. The
value of the computer is not the computer.
