So, you are solely interested in usability then?
Capability is the most important thing, as it is what the usability relys on.
Though most people don't see it. Just like you don't see the electrons move in
your TV screen, would you say they aren't important?
And your examples about improving capability are wrong, by the way. They are
improvements in usability, not capability, as the computer was perfectly capable
of doing those things (displaying images to the screen, reading keyboard input,
doing calculations in between them), it would just not be doing the calculations
you seem to want. Put a car in neutral and start the engine; no matter how hard
you press the accellerator, you still ain't gonna move.

By that argument a DVD player without the DVD is useless. When you insert the
DVD in the bay it becomes a useful machine able to play the DVD I want to see.
Or we can say a toaster is useless without the bread. But by providing bread the
toaster is now able to roast toasts.
Software is input to a universal algorithm. It is data. We can always argue the
algorithm is useless without the data. We can always argue that providing the
data is an improvement over the situation where the data is not present because
the algorithm becomes useful when it wasn't before. We can say that of any
algorithm, universal or not. Supplying data is not an improvement to the
machine.

Computer with no software == useless
Install a word processor ... STOP RIGHT THERE!
How are you going to install said wordprocessor? You just said the computer
doesn't have any software! So when you switch it on it's just going to sit there
like a doorstop. It won't know what to do with the
CD/floppy/memory-card/hard-disk/whatever.
Cheers,
