*YES* *IT* *COULD!*
That ability is baked into the hardware that talks to the hdds. *That* is what
lets it write data to persistant storage. Nothing in software will change
that.
Software is not magic.
It is a list of instructions.

And here's an interesting question for you: What is your definition of a
"document"?
It can't just be a file that contains data in a format, because that is
certainly possible for a computer to create without any specific piece of
software.
You really need to start being clearer, because you don't sound like you

You really aren't getting this, are you? I think a lot of people don't
understand that the entirety of software was anticipated by the mathematicians
who invented the Turing Machine, the Von Neumann Machine, etc. *ALL OF IT*. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Note usually does not preclude other methods. If you
were to look to the origins of word processing you would find that formatting
was added text constructs originally seen as extensions to or replacements for
ASCII format effectors, as in NROFF/TROFF or LaTeX and it's precursors. What
You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editing became widely popular with Microsoft
Office (and one early Office version shared common bugs with some ms
(manuscript) macros from TROFF such as the third field alignment in the footer
macro, showing a bit of plagarism despite being hidden by non-printing
characters).
Office being simpler to use than other typesetting WYSIWYG editors
and addressing the common needs.
To this day man pages using the man macros
are likely still written by hand. There are those of us stubborn enough to use
'cat' or 'echo' with appending redirection before using default editors we find
distasteful avoiding re-hosting editors of choice for simple jobs.
You could
contemplate that binary formats create the need for word processors, when
otherwise the formats would be readily apparent and subject to third part
interpretation.
You could also contemplate people writing HTML by hand such
as in this comment, HTML having common roots with LaTeX precursors.
The same
people capable of writing interpreters for text format directives seem to have
no trouble writing binary format interpreters. The difficulty lies in reading
them without display tools that will report binary values in a readable form not
subject to text format effector misinterpretation.
Electronic document
formats existed before Microsoft Office and before WYSIWYG.
