Coasting on his reputation?
Authored by: xtifr on Wednesday, July 18 2012 @ 01:11 PM EDT

I'm not sure, but I get the impression that Boies earned his reputation as a great lawyer, back in the day. The problem we have understanding that is that we're mostly seeing him now, when he's gotten to the point where he believes his own hype, and thinks he can do anything. Which is clearly not the case.

For that matter, he probably comes about as close as anyone could with these hopeless cases. If he were defending the downtrodden and failing to win, we'd probably still admire him for his pluck and determination. It's only because he keeps siding with such obvious bad guys that he starts to come across as a bad guy himself.

Not that I'm defending him. Anyone who seriously thought SCO's case was worth fighting is clearly not quite right in the head. But at least he's mainly been agreeing to attack those who can easily defend themselves, like IBM and Google. So it's not like he's a sadist. He may well imagine himself to be some sort of modern-day Don Quixote, tilting at windmills. And I can almost see it...

Except now I'm forced to remember that windmills have owners, who may be quite put out to find that some deranged idiot has been smashing them up with a big stick. It makes the Man of La Mancha a little less sympathetic when you think about it. :)

How BSF gets its revenue
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, July 18 2012 @ 10:24 PM EDT
This explains how BSF gets its revenue. That's not quite the same thing and it seems to be a bit of a fluff piece based mostly on information from BSF itself, but you may think that it's an interesting read, anyway.

The American Lawyer / Law.com: Don't Bet Against Boies Schiller

This paragraph may be particularly interesting (written in 2009):
The firm has lost money so far on The SCO Group Inc.'s doomed litigation against International Business Machines Corp. and Novell Inc., over its UNIX software code and technology. Under a deal struck in 2004, Boies Schiller agreed to cap its fees, and those of two other firms it hired, at $31 million in exchange for a percentage of any recovery. But the cases haven't resulted in any recovery, and in 2007 SCO filed for bankruptcy. [Outdated information removed] According to one Boies Schiller lawyer, the firm is "way into the red" on the matter.
It also mentions cases where the firm got huge payouts. One paragraph is about getting clients (not revenue), but basically just said something about referrals.
