I think Nokia was "bought", lock, stock, and barrel, by
Microsoft's offer of
billions of dollars in payments. The
pitch would be "You can't lose selling
devices running
Microsoft software - the best known name in the world."
There
was probably advance knowledge/discussion of the long
term goal - Metro
converging with the desktop. There was the
offer of a close relationship, where
Nokia gets input into
OS design, gets dispensation to modify the hardware specs
to
some degree. Really, for someone naive it would appear an
attractive
offer.
Just looking at the deal superficially: Well-known
software
giant Company X makes this kind of offer, who could
turn it down? The problem
was, Company X is Microsoft, and
you can't trust them, and their track record
in phones has
gone off the track. Nokia was seduced like a sucker at a
carnival. They bought the snake oil from the huckster, but
it didn't cure
their gout. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
