Microsoft Admits It Hasn’t Complied with EU Antitrust Order Since February 2011
Authored by: mcinsand on Tuesday, July 17 2012 @ 12:59 PM EDT
Let's look at the boundary conditions: 1) MS intentionally let the browser
choice window slip, 2) MS accidentally made a technical slip-up that negated the
choice window for more than a year. Granted, we all know that MS is more than
capable of a technical screw-up, but to ask anyone to believe that it went this
long with no-one noticing is asking a lot. HOWEVER, it doesn't matter...

This choice window was a requirement after an antitrust investigation, and MS
had a responsibility to implement it. If the 'error' was intentional, then it
was fraud. If it was accidental, then it's negligence. Both are punishable,
and both deserve punishment. If my company is ordered to fix an issue and we
accidentally let it slip, then we're still fined. MS is no different.

Now, we get to see the teeth of European law. Well, at least I hope they
haven't walked so far down the path that the US has taken that MS gets a free
pass. To do so would be to demean their original ruling.

Read two news items in the local newspaper today that some over here might find interesting, and found the following links when I went to look for online coverage:

Firefox 14 Encrypts Google Searches
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, July 17 2012 @ 04:36 PM EDT
This should be no different from what Chrome had been doing. I assume it's just
a natural consequence of using SPDY with Google services (since it mandates
using SSL).

Is there any UI or software concept no matter how trivial or pre-existing that
hasn't been re-patented as a new invention for mobile devices?

Paul Maritz replaced as VMware CEO.
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, July 18 2012 @ 12:56 AM EDT
Article here. Question is why???. From the article
Maritz joined EMC in 2008 when it acquired software startup Pi Corp., which Maritz founded in 2003. He is credited with taking it to a new level in his four years in charge and was the Business Journal's executive of the year in 2011. During his tenure at VMware, the company's revenue has doubled to $3.77 billion.
This ain't shabby performance. And much as one might like to think Pat Gelsinger to be more Linux-minded than an old Microsoftie, is there any reason to think Mr. Maritz was less than even-handed in this regard? I don't use VMware, so don't know myself, but its raison d'etre is to work well with everyone, equal opportunity top and bottom. Perhaps this shakeup was a mutually desired change. Anyone got a clue?

Anti-piracy Group Fined For Using Song Without Permission
Authored by: Anonymous on Wednesday, July 18 2012 @ 03:47 AM EDT
The title and the link below are self-explanatory, but ever so ironic

http://entertainment.slashdot.org/story/12/07/17/205255/anti-piracy-group-fined-
for-using-song-without-permission

The link to Slashdot holds more links to more original and more detailed
descriptions.
