The discussion was in the context of whether or not you can do anything you want
with things you buy.

Even though in the abstract you can program your computer to do anything you
want, the law prevents you from doing some things with it. Like infringing
patents.

Even though in the abstract a printing press can print anything you want,the law
prevents you from doing some things with it. Like forgery and copyright
infringement.
