I recently got a new computer. It came with Windows 7 installed. It never had
a chance to run. Before I even turned it on I took a needle and opened the
CD/DVD bay, and inserted a Live GParted disk and wiped the whole drive,
repartitioned, and installed Linux on it. I won't say i didn't have a few
problems getting it up to my working standards, but those were mostly related to
the fact that some of the ancillary equipment - video car, monitor and speakers
- were newer than what Debian expected.
It was worth the little extra work and frustration, though. I can watch movies
on a 27 inch HDMI monitor with 5.1 Surround sound. I can write books for my own
amazement, chapter by chapter, and join them in a master document, the turn them
into PDF files, complete with graphics that I made myself.
I think one of the things that people don't understand about Linux is the sense
of accomplishment one can get from doing things oneself. Of having the tools at
hand to accomplish things that one never thought were possible because of the
limitations of proprietary software.
