I recall a sci-fi short story about a consumerist society
gone haywire, where the focus on economic growth and
ever increasing consumption had created self-destructing
products to force people into buying e.g. new clothes
every day and new furniture every week, and where old
school products made of durable materials were outlawed.
The story mentioned an underground club where members
met in secret to build simple but long-lasting furniture
from wood harvested by stealth. I considered it a parody
at the time; a grossly exaggerated story about a future
we would surely never see because there simply would
have to be some intervention by common sense before
things went totally crazy, but now I'm starting to give
the author more credit for real predictions.
I'm also starting to feel more than a little bit sick.

Seems to me that this infringes upon most e-book sales models. ;) [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
