Linux is the answer
Authored by: Kilz on Thursday, July 05 2012 @ 09:47 AM EDT
I have linksys routers. I install dd-wrt on them. Its then a linux router that has tons of features. One of the features is the ability to set them up linked to each other, so I can use them to widen the wifi coverage and increase the signal strength at my house. We have also done this at my church.

Cisco Router trickery in EU would be interesting
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, July 05 2012 @ 12:35 PM EDT
In many, if not all, EU countries the forced 'update' and its conditions would
be a criminal offense and in breach of EU privacy rules. Somebody could well
serve time and there are other penalties

Switching to Netgear -

- as they have a Linux-based wireless router where the OS can be replaced by
the user. No more Cisco for me. Bye, Linksys, it was nice to know you. Sorry
about the acquisition, but you really should not have done business with the
Ferengi.

Re; yer bricked Cisco router
Authored by: Imaginos1892 on Thursday, July 05 2012 @ 05:03 PM EDT
If this happens to you, I have a proposal:

1. Take your router which they have so considerately bricked without even bothering to ask
2. Put it in a convenient place, like your driveway or a big steel pot
3. Baste liberally with gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid, etc.
4. Light it off, being careful to keep fingers, arms and eyebrows well back
5. Wait a bit
6. Scrape up the remains, put 'em in a box and mail it to Cisco

And include a nice little note explaining why you did it and what you think of 'em

If just one person does it they may think he's really sick.
If two people do it, well they'll think they're both kinda strange.
If three people do it they may think it's an organization.
And can you imagine if fifty people, fifty people a day mailed in their
burnt crispy Cisco routers, then friends, they may think it's a movement.

(with a tip of the hat to Arlo)

Have they backtracked?
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, July 06 2012 @ 09:32 AM EDT
Or did some of us get it wrong? It seems that their homepage has instructions to
roll back the update and prevent it reappearing. Perhaps a marketing suit hoped
nobody would notice and they'd generate a potential new revenue stream? On the
other hand it could just be a silly by somebody?
