Then let's have a mix-n-match. Basic healthcare is state funded, the expensive
extras insurance funded.

We're having exactly this debate over the NHS. You can't have a Rolls-Royce
service if you're only prepared to pay Lada prices. Your problem from our
viewpoint is that you can't even get Lada service if you're not rich.

State-funded basic health care is a net win. State-funded means that whether it
is insurance or tax based, everybody has to join in. And as has been repeatedly
pointed out by people in similar already-existing American schemes, it seems to
have driven costs DOWN for the same level of care.

Cheers,
Wol

Doctors operate appointment and drop-in surgeries free of charge and in my part
of the UK medication is free. Critical emergency treatment is immediate. I know,
it has just saved a family member's life. 5 mins, for paramedic attendance 10
for paramedic ambulance. 48 hrs in ITCU hooked up to the best of modern
equipment and excellent follow up care. Non-critical and elective treatments can
be a bit slower but it is there. The UK system is what has kept S Hawkins alive
and supported with the equipment he needs to keep his work going and he gets it
free of charge. As always, where people are involved, mistakes can be made but
they are rare enough to cause a major outcry. We also have one of the world's
best burns units here.
