I'm looking forward to seeing this play out. The WART acronym is excellent!
I like the article's reader comment: "I am altering the deal. Pray I don't
alter it any further."[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Never underestimate the ability of Microsoft to hurt the business of anyone who
depends on Windows to sell PCs. But this won't matter in the long run. It is the
vendors without a significant desktop/laptop/server business that have the
greatest ability to stay away of Windows. There is no shortage of such vendors.
The problem Microsoft has is this: if businesses use a significant quantity of
tablets, then business software vendors must have a version of their software
that runs on tablets. When that happens the Windows lock-in is gone.
Now imagine someone like Apple or Motorola selling a docking station for
tablets, allowing them to be used as desktop replacement when at office while
allowing them to be used as tablets when on the road. What is the point of
buying PCs in an environment like this? If the business applications run on the
tablets Windows is dead. Migrations away from Windows will spread like wild
fire.
The main hold-out will be Microsoft Office. Someday businesses will find this is
the only remaining application that ties them to Windows.

Saying that most probably weren't going to bother making ARM tablets anyway (for
good reason!), then saying that they dropped them because of the surface? Huh?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

He either resigned the role or was pushed out today. He won't be
leaving the
company though. From an article with a Synofsky interview.
Interesting times.
They needed a new person in that role anyway,
because no doubt his credibility
is shot with the OEMs. Would hate to
be in the new guy's shoes though.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Looking at the poor show of the Surface presentation and the timing of the
Google/Asus Nexus release it looks like Microsoft got wind and tried to rush a
spoiler out of the door. This whole thing is beginning to look like it will blow
up in their faces.

This is exactly *WHY* the Surface Vapour-Ware
was announced.
The hardware vendors have finally figured out
that getting in bed with Microsoft via the marketing
money is not going to pan out. They know that Win8
is DOA, so why put any resources into building a
locked-down mobo that will not sell?
So, Microsoft announces Surface in an attempt
to arm twist the vendors into signing on (swallowing
the marketing money) to a locked down mobo.
So, you go for it Microsoft. Go ahead and build
your own locked down mobo. See if anyone cares.
Because you will not ARM twist all of the ARM vendors
into not producing a free as in libre mobo.

Have the hardware manufacturers finally got wise enough to realize that the
only chance they have is to avoid Windows?
That to go with Windows is
only ensuring they are ultimately removed as MS competition?
I can
certainly hope that's what has occurred and this won't be a repeat of the
notebook destruction.
