And here's where the politics makes my head spin.
I believe it was initiated by the same political group that say the national
plan is so very very bad.
But hey, I'm not going to make fun of them. Our previous federal government
(let's call them "Blue") caused the heads of the opposition "Lets
call them "Red") to explode when they decided to house refugee
applicants in a location off-shore from Australia (think Guantanamo). Our High
Court (similar to you Supreme Court) says "Wait a minute -- you can't do
that because it is against your own laws!". It just so happened that a
change of Government now has the "Red" side in power, albeit with a
minority in the second house of Parliament (Senate -- effectively the same as
yours). They've now decided that doing the off-shore thing is actually a really
good idea but now need to enact legislation to allow it. And guess who is
opposing it? Wouldn't be the "Blue" side of politics would it? (Sure
is).
I remember a time when I was naive enough to think that politicians were in it
for something more idealistic than gladiatorial battles.
Putting on the rose coloured glasses for a moment... Wouldn't it be great if
there were political debates on the real issues, ones that perhaps concentrated
on the smaller issues that divide the various groups than the current polar
opposition that leads absolutely nowhere other than division and polarisation.
Sigh.
