Actually, Europe is nowhere near a single country ... I don't know enough of
American history to know what it was like with the Articles of Confederation.
What I do know is that the Euro is a good idea in principle. And - IF DONE
PROPERLY - I would love the UK to be a part of it. Except they messed up royally
when they implemented it, as we found out when we were forced out of the ERM.
What's happening now is pretty much the same thing, on a far bigger scale.
And they've messed up with Schengen, and free movement of people, and and and.
The Europeans are too keen on grands guestures - "it's a good thing, let's
do it". Most of these things ARE good ideas, just not thought through. Like
health care - if you didn't know the rules are actually pretty simple. As a
fully paid up member of the UK's health care system, should I be taken ill in
France the French system will treat me like a fully paid up Frenchman.
Which is why so many foreigners come over here. French healthcare isn't
expensive, but it isn't free. And the mismatch between all the national schemes
causes all sort of perverse incentives. Which should have been taken care of
with some sort of grandfather mechanism, but which the politicos are too gung ho
to consider. Why can't they think things through! (I know, they're
politicians!)
Cheers,
