There has been a steady stream of companies who have quit using the GPL for this
very reason.
- (as you mentioned) Ubuntu will not use grub2 because of
the GPLv3
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2012-June/035445.html
- Ap
ple has blocked any GPLv3 tools in OS X. Most obviously, gcc and bash. Apple is sponsoring
their preferred replacement - clang, llvm - co-sponsors are Qualcomm (iPhone
manufacturer) and Google. FreeBSD is also pushing for the end of
gcc.
Apple also designed the App Store licensing rules so that GPL
software is excluded. VLC was a casualty.
Bash is the
shell that makes OS X "unix-like." There are other shells, but none are as
popular. Apple stopped updating its bash shell at the last version before the
GPLv3.
- Other notable packages that have left the GPL
behind:
Richard Stallman
was right again when releasing the GPLv3. There is now a strong trend toward
locked-down systems everywhere.

just spend some time becoming familiar with the project.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
