Microsoft .NET was/is an attempt to do a "better Java", but
with tie in to Windows. It kind of succeeded (for some
people who didn't mind the tie in).
Mono was/is an attempt to do a .NET without the Windows tie
in (its success or failure is hotly debated elsewhere, and
don't bother reopening that debate here).
However a new free-from-birth language/ecosystem which can
reuse most of the non-Oracle Java code would be nice for the
thousands upon thousands of people lured into relying on
Java.

I think it would be interesting if Google were to arrange for compiling any of
the following directly into Dalvik: Scala, Clojure, Groovy, Ceylon,
Kotlin, Fantom, Gosu, Mirah, or Boo.
Thereby passing up Java-as-such
completely. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
