I suspect it is only partially opportunistic. The main bit
is a large number of people using that issue to get elected
and doing foolish things to show that they're responsive.
In addition, there's also a small, highly motivated minority
that pushes a lot of the security theater. (Eg., vendors
for airport scanners.) Don't discount them entirely
though...one of my friends is a bit of a pyro and, before 9-
11, would avoid shipping issues when buying discount
explosives by strapping them to his body and taking them on
a flight. He's stopped.
I actually just like the idea of an electronic voting
system. Any citizen who so chooses can log in and
participate in any scheduled vote - and their votes are
weighted as a fraction of the representative's vote.
In terms of laws, the thing I'd like is limited lifetime.
Eg, pass a law with a 50% majority...and it is good for 20
years. Pass a law with a 2/3rds majority...and it is good
indefinitely. We're getting to a point where there's enough
obsolete stuff on the books that it is difficult to avoid
committing felonies.
