Five to Ten Minute Boot Time???
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, June 26 2012 @ 02:25 PM EDT
My desktop used to take hours to bootup.

It ran several scripts checking system integrity, before allowing the login
script to start. Tripwire was just one of the programs that was called by those
scripts.

If you've ever had the pleasure of watching Tripwire check a 1TB drive, for
which it has no hashvalues to compare against...

Five to Ten Minute Boot Time???

I've got a modern machine that takes only 5 minutes to boot if you're lucky.

Mind you, it's got 2 SATA host controllers, 1 SAS host controller, 4 external
4-disk SATA port-multipliers, and a total of 28 hard disks and 1 SSD.

Yesterday, after a cable fault dropped the SSD offline (which hosts the OS, so
that kind of mattered a lot), it took 7 hours to finish booting. 10 1.5TB
filesystems had their numbers come up in the force-fsck lottery.

Mind you, if you used that thing as a desktop, you'd need Ear Defenders....
