Bill doesn't even have a concept of philanthropy, and he's not 'giving the wife
something to do'.

This is Melinda all the way. She said "your image stinks, gimme the
checkbook and let me fix it for ya"... the foundation was the result.

Sorry, but I have a different perspective...

The projects I've seen are actually geared towards helping large numbers of people at a low cost.
On the surface of what's generally reported, yes, that does appear to be the impression one gets.

However, every project I've taken a deep look into (as much as the public is able to) have come with strings attached. Examples:

We'll help you bring grain to the poor, here's some R&D money, we own the patents.
We'll help you cut some of your education costs.... here's our donation of computers with Microsoft software installed.
That's not philanthropy. That's future investing with an eye to cornering markets.

I am willing to be proven wrong though. As a result, I'll make you a deal:

If the Gates Foundation ever donates those grain patents to the public and teaches the starving in 3rd World Countries how to best farm their own food so the individuals become independent: I'll admit my expectation was totally wrong.
And note: I do mean truly independent where they can choose non-MS products from which to do their farming while freely practicing any Gates Foundation patents.

Nah - it's easy to understand the Gates Foundation

> There's not really much else you can do with excess money.

I can think of a number of uses:

Design a decent electric car, AS an electric car, not as a
gas-engine car retrofitted with an electric motor.

Design a decent aerospace-plane for low-orbit insertions,
one that operates more like a 747 than a rich-government's-toy.

Start up a really major solar-panel manufacturing capacity
in the US.
--------------------
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice.
In practice, there is.
