I would not want to defend Bill Gates or any of his works: definitely including
the so-called "medical" grants to third-world countries that come with
the (explicit!) requirement to let Gates dictate technology policy to that
government. In my lifetime and country, only an RIAA lobbyist or an Illinois
governor has ever reached quite that level of shameless corruption--and nobody
has exceeded it.
But there's nothing inherently wrong with looking for ROI on a charitable
donation. Even a legitimately philanthropic foundation might ask, "is this
contribution going to create an ongoing good that is self-sustaining, or will it
continue to need contributions?" If the latter, then the foundation must be
able (and willing) to commit its future income.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
