The problem for GPU manufacturers is that stock, run of the mill graphic chips
are "good enough" for most of the games that are currently available.
There are a plethora of other uses for GPU chips, such as data
encryption/decryption and animation rendering farms, but these are all niche, or
even micro-niche areas. None the less, they might provide sufficient business to
keep the company afloat.
Consider, for example, a card that consisted of a Beowolf Cluster of a dozen or
more GPU chips. Tweaked one way, it is suitable for rendering farms. Tweaked a
different way, it is suitable for constructing rainbow tables, and/or other
encryption/decryption processes. Tweaked a third way, it can be akin to MatLab
