In early 1992 I saw an article in EETimes which quoted an Intel exec as saying
that their forthcoming "80586" CPU was going to be so fast it would
make GPUs obsolete.
Such predictions may come true some day. When they do, feel free to post the
news here; I for one will want to read it.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Oh I don't know, the high end gamer PC market was plenty big
enough to support the GPU market from it's inception as a
consumer-grade product until the marketing drones finally
convinced everyone you needed a GPU for solitaire and
spreadsheets, though the high-end CAD users certainly
helped. And somehow I doubt either group will be satisfied
with integrated solutions any time soon.
Granted modern GPUs no doubt have higher development costs,
but I think if you include gaming consoles the "high end
gaming" market has expanded dramatically since the Voodoo
days.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
