A couple of weeks ago I was down town in an electronics mall getting some
networking stuff and noticed a few tablets (at least 2 brands) running ICS.
Different screen sizes of course.
Maybe I will take a better look today; I am going to get a cheap printer.

clicky
That's a strategy
doomed to fail - Microsoft's big problem
when it comes to 3rd party
manufacturers is the licensing
costs. Android is free (it does need some
developer
investment to get it going on the hardware, but probably no
more
than Win8)
And Microsoft has "no reason" to sell hardware
because it is less profitable than licensing
software
But
what about the Xbox? Microsoft has every reason to sell
hardware. Yes, Xbox
consoles sell at a loss with the real
profits coming from games and online
services.
Profit margins are being cut to the bone. Apple have an edge
due to the discounts they can get due to their massive
number of units.
Android manufactures don't get the hardware
discount edge, but the free OS
compensates for that. With
Win8, they have the worst of both worlds - Smaller
discounts
on hardware and no free OS.
If Nokia reach failure point an
MS buys them, Windows Phone
has a chance. But if that happens, existing Windows
Phone
manufacture are going to be very unhappy (and MS purchasing
Nokia is
going to get some pretty intense regulatory
scrutiny)
The way I see
it, Microsoft have really painted themselves
into a corner. The way I see it,
they only have one real
hope - Ditch 3rd party manufactures and, like apple, do
all
the hardware in house. But unlike apple, Microsoft have a
very popular
gaming console to leverage off (made even more
popular by Sony's
antics).
If I was a phone or tablet manufacturer thinking about Win8
/
Windows Phone, I would be very wary of Microsoft right
now...
Not to
mention that Microsoft like to 'revolutionise' their
OS making older
applications, if not incompatible at the API
level, incompatible at the
look-and-feel level. Who wants a
Win10 tablet running Win8, Win9, and Win10
software which
all look and behave differently? At least with Ice Cream
Sandwich, Gingerbread apps all look and feel like they still
belong.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
