And Swann was using tungsten years before Edison filed his patent - Edison KNEW
ABOUT SWANN. I believe he had visited Swann's factory!
So Edison's carbon patent WAS BASED UPON Swann's tungsten patent.

Penicillin ... Fleming
So what about Florey, Chain and Heatley?
Wrt 'sole inventor' claims check out the interaction between Heatley and Moyer
...
The Brits were unable to patent the drug - it was a discovery ... and even if
legally possible it would have been unethical to patent (cf the term 'patent'
medicine).[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The light bulbs of the time were vacuum based. This prevented heat loss other
than through radiation. It also causes the metal to evaporate into the vacuum.
That causes the core of the wire to melt.
This was also detected by the "Edison Effect" as some of the metal
would be deposited on the inside of the glass. Though the effect was on the
electrons flowing, the discoloration is from the metal.
The current tungsten filaments are in a nitrogen athmosphere which provides
convection cooling.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
