Last point first: a version of XBMC, called RaspBMC, already works on R-Pi. If you are focused on video, that's the place to start.

The R-Pi is essentially three chips wired together, plus a bunch of simple support electronics and physical ports on the outside. Those three chips are a Broadcom 2835 SoC, a 256MB RAM chip (package on package), and a USB Ethernet controller.

The 2835 itself contains an ARM1176JZF-S CPU core, nominally at 700MHz, and a Broadcom VideoCore 4 GPU. The latter supports H.264 decoding to 1080p, OpenGL ES 1 and 2, OpenVG, and unlike most VideoCore implementations shares the same RAM as the CPU core which permits direct rendering to the framebuffer - just in case the above options are insufficient.

So far, all my software does is ask libopenmaxil what components it knows about, what ports the components have, and what formats the ports understand. (Geek log "corrects" some <ul> to <u>. I have fixed this in the preview, but Geeklog sometimes "corrects" the final version differently.) Here are the results:
