Well, let's say I buy a chip. It's a simple chip. It advertises itself, not as
a device for manipulating voltages, but as a TTL NAND chip. Now we're
manipulating symbols, not just voltages.
Same thing when I get to an FPGA. My tools that let me program the thing do so
in terms of logic gates, not in terms of voltages.
I think your argument fails on this point.

But I am sure we can find printed
material which is practically
useful, like a dictionary or a map.
I was always told that if I
didn't know how to spel a werd I shuld look it up in a dicshonery; but how can I
look it up if I can't spel it in the first place? Thus dicshonerys must be
useless....unless it's a big one in which case it can be used to prop open a
