I don't think you understood me. If you did, you just made a
great argument for abolishing all patents.
The question is, how does the patent system "promote"
innovation? By encouraging things to be invented earlier,
right? Twenty-five years earlier, one assumes.
Do you really think this swipe idea was twenty-five years
ahead of its time???[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

How did patents encourage the invention of the steam engine?
They hobbled it with the sun and planet gear for twenty years. And they also
stopped it from including better pressurisation, and intergrating other
improvements.
How did patents encourage development of heavier-than-air flight?
They delayed it becoming a genreally available commercial service by twenty
years, when there were lots of similar attempts going on at the same time.
Do you know why Hollywood is where it is?
To avoid a patent on cellophane film projectors/projection/recording (can't
remember exactly which one it was).
When have patents *ever* encouraged invention of something that wouldn't have
been developed otherwise? Serious question. Point me at an example of the
patent system working as it's supporters claim is intended.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
