1. Clearly, one of the reasons that there is support in high places for the
patent regime in the U. S. as well as for the copyright regime, and for the
proliferation of software patents in particular, is a perception that such
things can be used to control the rest of the world and pay tribute.
This attitude is extremely shortsighted because:
2. China is not without a patent system of its own.
3. With the long-term imbalance of trade and imbalance of payments, Chinese
companies have been buying American companies which hold U. S. patents,
including many of patents of the type which are being complained about here.
Thus, the U. S. patents owned by those formerly U. S. owned and controlled
companies are owned and controlled by Chinese companies with headquarters in
China.
4. Chinese companies are applying for U. S. patents, too, including software
patents.
Establishment attitudes could possibly change if it were to come to the point
that large numbers of the ridiculous patents which are causing such trouble and
causing such complaints as are manifested in the responses to this article were
owned by foreign companies and foreign governments who would be able to hold the
American economy hostage by the simple expedient of using our own patents and
our own court system which makes it so nearly impossible to challenge the
current status quo.
We live in interesting times, which could get even more interesting.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
