Hey, it's Adam Smith's invisible hand and all....
And if I didn't want a little more, why should I do *ANYTHING* for anyone?
So I conclude that greed itself is a fundamental force of nature...(just ask my
dog, when presented with too much food -- grin!)...but that it needs to be
controlled and balanced against the needs of the society as a whole.

Contrary to 'the gospel according to Hollywood' slaves were not used in building
the pyramids. Only Egyptian citizens could be employed (yes that is the right
word) because the project was sacred and on the gods' lands. Available evidence
shows that the building crews were very well looked after for the times. They
had their own private medical facilities, were well 'paid', had a good diet and
some at least were literate. They left graffiti boasting about their work etc. -
slaves don't do that. The royal tomb was important for the well-being of Horus
and therby Egypt. They were even given materials from royal resources to prepare
for their own burials near the pyramids. From the Egyptian viewpoint that was a
great gift.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
