A fedora users old computer dies and they decides to get a
new one. They havent been following the UEFI situation and
so they buy a computer that has Windows 8 and the UEFI cant
be disabled or they have no idea how to turn it off because
its 6 links deep in the UEFI settings and they cant find it.
They get the computer home and pop in the Linux install disk
and they cant get it to boot.
Now lets look at another example. Joe the new linux user
like Distro B (any distro that hasnt got a key signing) and
buys a new computer because smoke poured out of his old one
when he spilled a can of coke on it. He doesnt think hes
smart enough to build a computer and wont try. But he heads
down to Walmart and buys the cheapest one. It has Windows 8
on it and the UEFI cant be disabled.
Will either of these users just decide to just keep the
computer because they need one right now and they will
figure it out later? What happens when they try and try and
finally give up after the time they can return the computer
has past?
What happens to the linux user base? Its small now, but how
much smaller will it get? Im not saying that some court will
eventually step in and force a change in UEFI at some point
in the future. But what happens in the year or 2 we wait for
that to happen?
