not code but account access being hacked ...
Authored by: nsomos on Wednesday, June 06 2012 @ 09:18 AM EDT
Parent asks ...
"What is a "state-sponsored hack"?
What code is being hacked?"

It is not code being hacked, but instead account access.

This other article explains somewhat ....
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9174044/Gmail_now_warns_users_of_suspicio
us_account_activity

---------------------
If an account is accessed from one country, then again a few hours later from a
different country, Google would likely sound the alarm. The assumption: The
multiple and geographically divergent log-ons would be a clue that the account
had been hacked, and was now being used to send spam, spread scams or distribute
malware.

"It's actually much more sophisticated than that," said Will Cathcart,
a Gmail product manager. "If we determine that an IP down the block [from
you] has logged into your account, and has recently logged into lots and lots of
accounts, we'll display the warning."
---------------------

So if the account hacking activities seem to be coming
from some government, then that would be 'state-sponsored'.
It is almost frightening how some people have very
weak passwords. There might be multiple failed login
attempts using the most common passwords, and that might
be deemed an attempted hack.
