I really wonder if they are paying, since the terms of those agreements are not
public and subject to confidentiality agreements leaving Microsoft to whisper in
the ears of it agents and spread rumors and disinformation.
Samsung seems to have no trouble waging a global legal war with Apple.

I'm not defending Samsung's deal with Microsoft in any way here, but what does
supporting Linux Foundation have anything to do with their dealings with
Microsoft?
Not to try excuse their dealings with Microsoft (I do think that allowing
Microsoft to make such claims and threats is despicable), but I'm willing to bet
that the fact that Samsung sell many PC related products and other Microsoft
based products would have something to do with what happened with licensing
dubious Microsoft patents for Android.
Note that many of the major manufacturers that have signed agreements with
Microsoft about these patents without ending up in court also have other
dealings with Microsoft (typically, they need massive amount of favourable
Microsoft Windows/Office and other product licenses for their products to
compete on the market effectively). You could argue that Microsoft is using
their monopoly in one market (PC with Microsoft Windows and Office) as a
leverage into other "markets" (mobile devices and patent trolling,
just like they have done with servers and services before this :p). Though I do
agree that this whole patent issue a bad thing, but for many of these
manufacturers, offending Microsoft at this point will probably cost them a lot
more than they can afford. What would you expect them to do? Purposely go to
court (increase expenses) and destroy their products in the market due to not
getting a favourable licensing deal from Microsoft (decrease income)? Their
shareholders will kill them :p.
Not saying that it is fair, but if you look at it from a different point of
view, the more successful the manufacturers are with Linux based platforms, the
less they will rely on Microsoft software, the less likely Microsoft will be
able to get these manufacturers to sign such deals in the future.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
