Hacked != Cracked

The GP is asking what is being hacked.

He is making a snarky comment about the word "hack" being utterly
misused by the media.

The article is not about account hacking, as that would be something like
building an email client that gives the appearence of being a facebook clone.
The article is about account cracking (as in "to crack a safe").

I must assume that in the US, the Computer Crime branch of
the Government are working hard to catch these people since
trying to break into a person's computer accounts is a
serious crime in the US. Perhaps a little wishfull thinking
here, but one would only hope.
