there is no need to believe that organisations as such have a 'moral character'.

First, I don't think you mean 'organizations.' I think you mean 'companies.' Or would you equate the moral character of, for example, Habitat for Humanity with that of Microsoft?

But beyond that, you ignore the fact that some companies take steps to establish a code of conduct and ensure that employees follow it.

When I worked for one such organization, I was given annually a copy of the code of conduct along with a form to sign. By signing the form I acknowledged that I read the code, understood it and also understood that violations could result in termination. Signing the form was a condition of employment.

I never witnessed nor heard of a violation of that code. I was reminded, though, of what I could and could not say to customers; and not just by managers, but by my peers within the company.

So I claim this as evidence of a 'moral character' within that company, at least at that time, and that it was superior to companies where the motto is 'win at any cost.'

COmpanies often take on the personality of their leader, Who can deny the
Microsoft was not a larger version of BillG or that Apple was not the creature
of Jobs. Organizations acquire a culture, a set of shared values that guides
decision making that is their conscience and soul. IBM also has a very distinct
culture, inherited from it's history. Cultures can value many things, some good
and some bad, most have some elements of both. Some elements are good or bad
depending on how you look at them. Apple is a great example, great products
coupled with a drive to control every aspect of their use, but without the
apparent evil intent of some companies to win at all costs.
