Maybe PJ is right and Oracle/Larry Ellison is now
a newly minted good guy.
OK, no problem.
But I still would not want him to marry my daughter. Or
come worship at my temple.

When I log in, my sig is "Companies are amoral: they only do good deeds to
make you forget the last time they did bad ones"
I guess I'll have to adjust that to take into account when they find themselves
pushed into a place where doing the right thing is obviously what's short-term
best for them as well.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Let's suppose, for the sake of argument, that Oracle wants
to release a new feature for the Oracle database. From now
on, you're licensed by the gigabyte. Each time your quota is
used up, the DBMS stops, and a window pops up on your screen
inviting you to enter a credit card number, to have the
$10,000 "Additional gigabyte of storage" license fee charged
to it.
Now, let's suppose Oracle was on the cusp of releasing this
feature, when one of its lawyers burst into Larry's office,
yelling "Stop! Stop! We can't do this! It's an "in-app
purchase"... which means we need a license from Lodsys!"
Who would be evil then?
Ha ha! Didn't think of that did you? It could be that Lodsys
is preventing Oracle from doing the most evil thing it's
done in the last five minutes!
