Keep in mind, that like most tech people, Bill Gates probably
considers lawyers to be a lower life form.
You really think he
believes his dad, a senior partner of Preston, Gates & Ellis since
1964, is a lower life form?

I would call that
sort of attitude "being rude". I certainly don't judge the character of people
that way.

... the most interesting thing about his deposition is that he
(...) often rambles on for several sentences about nearly-unrelated topics,
(...) It might be a personality trait that he just can't help trying to impose
his view of things on whoever he is talking to.
Most likely,
he's simply one of those sort of people who likes to hear the sound of his own
voice, and he's had enough money for long enough that he has long been able to
afford to surround himself with people who are willing to be paid to listen to
him. This is a common failing with millionaires and popular celebrities. He no
doubt by this time has also managed to convince himself that he is some sort of
"genius" and that people ought to be grateful for the opportunity to hear the
pearls of wisdom that he casts forth.
I wouldn't worry too much about
the feelings of the lawyers though. Listening to people who drone on endlessly
and pointlessly is all part of the job of being a lawyer.

First, as others have pointed out, his father is a successful
Lawyer.
The biography's I've read all give indication Mr. Gates is
learned in Legal processes himself. I'm not refering to the official education
kind, but more in the kind that one gets by being raised by a successful Lawyer
combined with understanding the importance of such and working closely with the
Company Lawyers.
I've been long under the suspicion that had Mr. Gates
not been so aware of the Law, the behavior of MS may very well have been quite
different. It would not surprise me to find out that the bulk of the strategies
MS has employed have been at the behest of Mr. Gates when in said discussions
with the Company Lawyers.
To myself, Mr. Gates is not above weighing the
cost of breaching a contract against the gains such a breach would entail and
making a very conscious decision not to honor the contract. This is from having
observed so much of MS' behavioral patterns over the years combined with Mr.
Gates part in those patterns as highlighted within the Legal Cases.
So...
if my suspicions with regards Mr. Gates character and knowledge are reasonably
accurate:
Bill Gates probably considers [himself] to be a lower life
form
I dun think so.
True, he's not official a Lawyer, but if my
suspicions on his knowledge and how it helps him make decisions is accurate -
close enough.

I'll leave it to you to find it, because it's a tiff, so
I can't just copy and paste, but look for the part where
he tells the lawyer that he read from the transcript very well.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

By about page 11, Gates has already been questioned about two documents that he
says he had never seen before. And series of questions about product that never
shipped. Early on he says that if it didn't ship then it didn't exist.
By this time he is saying, "Well, I know that we never shipped an Office
shell, but I also know you read that sentence quite well."
I admit I'm a bit on Gates' side at this point.
