Don't buy devices which give them money.
Complain to the manufacturers who caved in. Tell them that
paying MS money is not something that you can be part of.
Unfortunately the options for non MS funding phones are
quite thin on the ground.
I wonder if there's a good summary of the current
outstanding and surviving patent claims from MS against (for
example) Motorola. I understand that they have an activesync
patent in play which could be hard to work around without
removing MS email sync capability.
I think the solution would be to remove the activesync code
from the OS, and allow external apps to implement it if they
want to license the tech as appropriate. It could even hook
into the account sync system.
Frankly, having compatibility with MS mail servers is not a
bonus in my view (though I can see it would be useful for
some businesses.) I certainly would not be willing to pay
for it.
I'm not sure if that patent impacts other functionality or
