Ah the Office Ribbon.
The UI for Office on OS/X is actually more usable (IMHO) than the mess that is
on Windows. Funny that!
I get asked why I take my MacBook into the office. When I tell them and then
show them the UI they understand. I do all my doc prep on the Mac.
I have tried OpenOffice/Libreoffice but the doc templates we have to use just
don't play nice with them. Numbered lists are totally borked.
Going back to my original post, where are the developers for all these wonderful
Metro Apps going to come from?
Server 2012 is even worse. If you are an experienced Server Admin then you have
lots of utilities and scripts to hand. No more menu system. you have to pin it
to the taskbar.
I really would like to see the usability reports on this train wreck that it
about to hit the stores. I have to wonder if they ever tested any real life
scenarios. Did they ever have to repartition/reformat a removable drive?
On the bright side, now will be a really good time for businesses to look into
an alternative. Sadly IMHO Unity is not fit for purpose (yet), not is Gnome 3.
Windows 8 will IMHO have a disasterous effect on new PC Sales if Microsoft stop
selling Windows 7 once Windows 8 is out. As it stands, I could not recommend
switching to anyone with more then two brain cells functioning. It is going to
cost you an arm and a leg to train your staff.
Businesses will take a long cold look at Windows 8 and say 'pass'. MS Revenues
will suffer as will that of the likes of HP, Dell etc.
One big winner here will be Apple. There is room for more.

Ubuntu & 'apt-get' are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which
is of course, "42" or is it 1.618?

You know what puzzles me? Why don't people
mind that they can't really control much of
what happens on a mobile?
I admit it's fun to have something with you when
you are in transit, but if I had to live on a
mobile, I'd be in major distress.
I think eventually we'll see the market catch
up with what Larry Page said in an interview
recently with whatever his first name is Rose,
that PCs aren't over. What's over or will be is
the bad user experience of 8 wires you have to
hook up to your PC, etc.
Money is like sheep. They follow the leader.
But users are as diverse as can be, and there is
no way long term that mobiles will be all there
is. It's just that money sees China as the next
big market. They took all our money already.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
