An interesting piece which has
made me think a bit about this topic.
The 'Milking of the client' by lawyers
is really no different to the same practice as performed by Accountants and
Consultants the world over. It even applies to your local Car Dealer franchise.
In the latter, you have some work done and they mess up, how often do you end up
paying for them to rectify their problems.
I remember sitting in on a
meeting between some Anderson consulting 'consultants' and a Client. The client
is a Multi-billion $$ company. At one point there was a break and I left
the room with the client reps. The door was left open and upon returning I
overheard the lead of the Anderson team stressing to his colleagues that 'we'
(the client were ripe for milking to the tune of $500k at the very
least.
I told the client about this who smiled sweetly. The next 40 minutes
was pure theatre as the Andersons team were led up the garden path in great
style.
The next day, we started getting calls from other Anderson Consultants
eager to 'help'. Little did they know that at that very moment their contracts
were being terminated.
The company I worked for at the time got a whole load
more business simply because we acted in a far more Ethical way.
I can't
help wonder if there was less 'milking' going on, a happy client would be more
inclined to return and do more business with your firm rather than doing it from
the outset with a bitter taste in their mouth.

are not the answer to Life, The Universe & Everything which is of course, "42"
or is it 1.618?
