Google did not play dirty, they did exactly what IBM does -
they stood up to the bully.

Of course, it helps to search for prior art when you're THE
search engine company. Now THAT'S a knife!

Google played dirty.
By challenging the patents? Yeah, I only wish more companies would play "dirty" that way! Especially in light of Bilski and Mayo.

It helps that Sun never took patents very seriously. Oracle thought they got a nice collection of patents with which to threaten the world, but what it turns out they got was a collection of humorous patents intended for little more than to make a portfolio look more impressive, for defensive purposes.

In another way of putting it, Oracle thought it had a big patent chest and that
Google would be at a disadvantage with its small patent portfolio. Oracle
expected that the patent war would be a cakewalk and Google would fold like a
cheap suit. Instead Google went all asymmetric Boer war on Oracle's ass.
